MINDSET - What Do You Measure?

November 7, 2019

What Do You Measure?

Measuring is important. Measuring matters in big and little ways. (Precisely how big or little can probably be measured.)

Measuring is how we keep score and know if we’re headed in the right direction. It tells us, without guessing or fooling ourselves, how close or far we are from achieving our goals.

More than 65 years ago, long before the age of big data, legendary management consultant Peter Drucker said, “What gets measured, gets managed.” Boy, did he get that right.

Measuring something kicks open the door of possibility by giving us the information we need to make sure we actually achieve what we set out to do.

The simple act of measuring increases our motivation to perform. It helps make us accountable. It reminds us of where we want to end up.

How much do I weigh now?

Am I getting any faster at running/jogging/walking around the track/block/neighborhood?

What is this month’s revenue? ... and how does it compare with last month’s? ... and the month before that?

The question we’re really asking is: Am I making progress? There’s only one way to know for sure: Keep measuring.
